Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline in 1835 but due to the decline in the domestic textile industry, his family emigrated to the USA where he started work in a mill.

This cottage is the birthplace of Andrew Carnegie

It has been extended and is now a Museum.

Andrew Carnegie sold his United States Steel Corporation in 1901 and retired with a fortune of £400 million, making him the richest man in the world.
By the time he died he had given away £350 million, some of this was used to set up Trust Funds which have continued his work ever since.
Dunfermline has benefitted greatly over the years.

This was the first home for the Dunfermline College of Physical Education, or Dumf as it was better known by students.

Baldridgeburn Institute, one of four built. The others were at Rosyth, Townhill and Netherton.
