Holidays in New York

This is a view from Battery Park. On the left is the brown building where Chris was living when he first went to New York.
At the end of the street is where the World Trade Centre stood.

This is the front door to one of the buildings in the Appartment Complex where Chris now lives. There must be about ten buildings like this

This is the quickest way to travel from New Jersey to Wall Street

The Municipal Building in Edgewater, just along from the Appartment where Chris lives now.

Veterens Park in Edgewater, the local public park . Here is a sunday morning game of baseball. Across the road are new houses built on the side of the steep slopes which lead up to the main communities

Wildlife also enjoys the park, here are some of the geese which wander about everywhere next to the river.

Edgewater Shopping Mall on a winters morning.

On our first trip to New York we had a day on the river.
After a trip up the Hudson River from New York, we were put ashore and transported to the Sleepy Hollow Visitor's Centre in a genuine American yellow School Bus

The Visitor's Centre was at the buildings which feature in the book and the film 'The legend of Sleepy Hollow'
This is a working Mill with demonstrations by guides in Period Costume

The Buildings next to the Mill are the original house of the owner and a barn both of which have been restored

This year we went on a helicopter trip Down the River Hudson to the Statue of Liberty.

Weehawken is a small community further down the River Hudson from Edgewater. Like all communities it is very patriotic, with flags flying and well cared-for War memorials. Situated at the edge of the very steep slope not far from the river there are wonderful views.

This is the Port Imperial where the ferries for Manhatton leave.

Looking north up the River Hudson. This piece of land will be developed soon, no doubt even more appartments.

Looking southwards are more new developments and other ferry ports.

Directly accross in Manhatton are the piers where cruise liners depart from.

A memorial for the Thomas jefferson who was killed in the last duel fought in New York. The site of the duel was just below here .

Central Park is situated in the middle of Manhatten. This is how it looked when we were there at the end of 2002

Seems strange to think that this photo was taken in the middle of the 'City that never sleeps'

Everything is big in New York. It looks great but just watch them trying to park it !

I suppose it's cheaper to light up trees than it is to put up street lights

We went over to Staten Island on the ferry and passed close to the Statue of Liberty.

Also went close to Ellis Island where millions of immigrants landed before they made their way inland

A much closer view of Ellis Island. Most of the present Island was reclaimed land.

As the number of imigrants grew more facilities were required. This building was a hospital.

The entrance into the building where all the immigrants came before they could move on to mainland USA.

Upstairs was the main processing hall. At the end of the hall are the original desks of the Immigration Officers.

The Flat Iron Building, called that because of its unusual triangular shape. When it was completed in 1902, it was the tallest building in the world.

The Empire State Building from ground level.
The Observation Gallery is on the 86th floor, about 1 minute in the elevators, but much longer in the queues.
Construction was completed in 1931, taking only 1 year and 45 days.

Looking west towards New Jersey across the Hudson River. The curved building which is only just visible, is Maddison Square Gardens.

Looking North up the Hudson River. On the left is New Jersey, connected to Manhattan by the George Washington Bridge.

Looking South, the cluster of tall buildings is around Wall Street. In the distance is Staten Island.

Looking east towards Queens.

One of the huge inflatables from the Thanksgiving Day parade down Broadway.
There were about fifty of these characters with thousands of people marching along with them.

Sport in New York is something that just has to be experienced. So far we have been to Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey and American Football.
